AI Overviews summarize complex questions and provide links for users to read further. AI Mode supports longer, dialogic explorations and comparisons. Both functions build on the Search index and existing ranking and quality systems, but can show more and different sources via query fan-out than a classic results page.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are generative summaries within Google Search that show a composite answer and supporting links for suitable search questions.

Google shows an AI Overview when its systems expect that summary to provide additional value on top of the regular search results. The function therefore does not appear with every search. The composition and links shown can also change per question, moment and available source.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a dialogic search experience for questions where further exploration, reasoning, or comparison is useful.

Users can ask follow-up questions and get a more detailed answer with links to supporting websites. AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques. Their answers and sources therefore do not have to be the same.

Search experienceMain functionSource viewMeasurement
Classic SearchA results page with separate organic and paid results.Links, snippets and supported search functions.Regular Search Console Performance reporting.
AI OverviewsA summary of questions where Google expects extra value.Supporting links within and around the answer.Generative impressions, if the separate report is available.
AI FashionAn extensive conversation with follow-up questions and comparisons.Links to sources that support parts of the answer.Generative impressions, if the separate report is available.

What is query fan out?

Query fan-out is a technique in which Google runs multiple related queries to find subtopics, data, and appropriate sources for a composite answer.

A broad question can therefore be divided into sub-questions about definitions, options, conditions, prices, locations or evidence. This creates opportunities for specific source pages that cover a relevant part well, even when that page is not in position one in the original wording.

What conditions apply to admission?

A page must meet the normal technical requirements of Google Search and be suitable to be displayed with a snippet.

ConditionWhat Google documentsPractical control
IndexingThe page must be in the Google index.Check the canonical URL with URL Inspection.
Snippet eligibilityThe page must qualify for a regular Search snippet.Check robots and snippet instructions.
Search rulesSearch's technical requirements and spam guidelines still apply.Resolve crawling, indexing and quality issues.
Useful contentGoogle recommends reliable, people-first content.Include a complete answer, unique value, and proof.

A page that meets all the conditions is not automatically guaranteed crawling, indexing, inclusion, or a supporting link. Google continues to determine which functions and sources are shown per search query.

Do you need special optimization?

No. Google explicitly says that there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The foundation remains strong SEO: useful and unique content, crawlable pages, internal links, good user experience and important information in visible text. GEO helps organize that foundation around questions, entities, source quality, evidence, and discrete measurement, but doesn't change Google's official eligibility requirements.

Do you have to rank high to appear as a source?

No, Google does not document a minimum ranking requirement for a support link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

A strong organic base helps because the generative functions use the Search index and existing ranking and quality systems. However, query fan-out can retrieve a broader set of sources for different sub-queries. Therefore, do not report a fixed minimum position and never present a classic ranking as a guarantee of a source citation.

How do you make content stronger as a supporting source?

Make content primarily for people, with a specific answer, verifiable information, and more value than general summaries provide.

  • Answer one clear main question per page or source section.
  • Add your own experience, cases, data, photos, tests or methodology.
  • Use headings and paragraphs that logically guide the visitor through the topic.
  • Identify conditions, differences, exceptions and limitations.
  • Koppel belangrijke claims aan auteurschap, bronnen, datums of zichtbaar bewijs.
  • Use tables and lists when they really improve comparison or understanding.
  • Update changing prices, features, rules and availability.
  • Avoid almost identical pages for individual keyword variations.

A GEO strategy determines which questions and resource pages are prioritized. A GEO audit first records where content, evidence, entities and technology are currently lacking.

Should content be broken up into small AI chunks?

No. Google does not require content to be divided into very small text blocks for generative Search features.

Short sections and clear headings can help visitors, but there is no ideal chunk size or mandatory page length. Let the information need and readability determine the structure, not an alleged AI format.

Do you need special structured data?

No. There is no special schema.org markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode and structured data is not a separate eligibility requirement.

Use structured data when Google supports an appropriate type and match the markup exactly to the visible content. It can help to correctly describe existing entities and search functions, but should not be presented as a direct AI ranking factor or inclusion guarantee.

Does llms.txt help for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says that llms.txt does not positively or negatively affect visibility and rankings in Google Search.

An organization can maintain a llms.txt file for other systems, but for Google, indexable HTML, useful content, and good technical structure are the first priority.

Do you need to write in a special AI style?

No. Content doesn't have to be written exclusively for generative systems or in an artificial response style.

Direct answers, clear definitions and logically constructed comparisons help visitors. They can improve source function, but are not a trick that forces recording. Write completely enough for the decision the visitor wants to make.

What role do entities and external sources play?

Consistent information about organizations, people, services, products and locations helps users and search engines find the same facts from different sources.

  • Use one central organizational page with current company information.
  • Make expertise and authorship visible through real personal pages.
  • Describe services and products consistently across the site and relevant Google products.
  • Publish cases and own evidence that add substantive value.
  • Avoid artificial entries created solely to simulate authority.

What role do Google Business Profile and Merchant Center play?

Current data in Google Business Profile and Merchant Center can be relevant to local and product-focused search experiences.

Keep names, addresses, opening hours, categories, products, prices and availability the same as the information on the website. These Google products do not replace strong landing pages and do not provide a general guarantee of inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

What are Preferred Sources?

Preferred Sources is a user-friendly feature that allows people to select websites as their preferred source in Google Search.

When someone chooses a site as a preferred source, relevant links from that site in AI Overviews and AI Mode can be highlighted with a preferred label. This is a personal preference of that user, not a blanket ranking guarantee or setting that a website owner can activate for all searchers.

How do you measure visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Use the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console when this report is available for your property.

PartWhat the report showsHow to use it
ImpressionsHow often a link to your site was visible in supported generative functions.Follow the trend over longer periods.
PagesWhich canonical URLs received generative impressions.Find sources of traction or decline.
CountriesWhere the search activity came from.Compare markets with sufficient data.
DevicesDesktop, mobile or tablet.Check differences in range.
DatesDaily, weekly or monthly values in Pacific Time.Compare equivalent periods and releases.

How does the generative report compare to the regular Performance report?

The generative Search data is also included under search type Web in the regular Performance report, while the separate report provides a targeted view of generative impressions.

Use the generative report for this specific visibility and the regular report for the full Search view. Always indicate from which report a figure comes. Do not add both data sets, as the same impressions may be reported twice.

What does the generative report not measure?

The report does not explain why Google chose a page and does not in itself prove any commercial impact.

  • It does not show a complete prompt or query list.
  • It does not explain why a page was selected as a supporting source.
  • It shows no visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity or other external systems.
  • It doesn't prove leads or revenue without analytics and conversion data.
  • It does not include experiments that run only in Search Labs.

For a broader channel comparison, use the established methodology to measure AI visibility.

How do you check specific search queries?

Combine Search Console with a limited, fixed set of manual checks of key Google searches.

  1. Save the exact search query, language, location, device and date.
  2. Note whether AI Overviews or AI Mode was available.
  3. Record the links shown and the core message of the answer.
  4. Use manual testing as a qualitative check, not as a replacement for Search Console.
  5. Compare only equivalent conditions and longer trends.

Can you exclude your website from Generative Search features?

Yes. Google is rolling out a Search Generative AI control in Search Console that allows a site owner to include or exclude a property's links and content from supported Generative Search features.

Recording is the default setting. Excluding prevents links and content from the property from being visible in the supported generative functions or serving as input to substantiate an answer there. The choice is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Google Search. A change may take several days to fully take effect.

What is the difference between Search generative AI control, Google-Extended and noindex?

The three controls have different scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

ControlGoalConsequence
Search generative AI controlInclude or exclude in supported Google Search and Discover generative functions.Affects AI Overviews, AI Mode, and supported generative Discover features, not the rest of Search.
Google ExtendedManage training and grounding usage of certain generative models.Does not control regular crawling, indexing, or serving in Google Search.
noindexKeep a page completely out of Google Search. The page cannot appear in regular or generative search results.

What does visibility in Google AI mean for traffic?

Generative answers can reduce the need for a click for some informational questions, but supporting links can also direct new visitors to specific and diverse resources.

Therefore, don't just judge the total number of clicks. Also track generative impressions per page, landing pages received, engagement, conversions and changes in commercial or branded searches. Never attribute a decline entirely to AI Overviews without analysis by query, page, period and other Search element.

Which content has the most strategic value?

Content with first-hand experience, unique data, expert analysis, up-to-date business information and verifiable evidence has more strategic value than generic information that can be easily reproduced.

Source typeExampleValue for user and source selection
Own dataPrice dataset, research, benchmark or product inventory.Adds information that is not identically available everywhere.
Firsthand experienceCase, test, implementation or expert observation.Makes assessment and limitations verifiable.
Primary company informationServices, products, locations, policies and contact details.Provides the official source for facts about the organization.
Decision informationComparison, selection criteria, risks and exceptions.Helps answer a complex question completely.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Present AI Overviews as a separate search engine with its own technical requirements.
  • Presenting an organic top position as a condition or guarantee for source mention.
  • Selling special AI scheme, llms.txt or content chunking as a Google ranking hack.
  • Publish large numbers of query variants without unique value.
  • Structured data deviate from the visible content.
  • Collecting artificial mentions or links to simulate authority.
  • Double counting generative impressions and regular Web data.
  • Using Google data as evidence for visibility in external AI systems.
  • Attributing traffic changes entirely to generative functions without analysis.

What is not automatically included?

The assignment describes in advance which content, technology, Google products and reporting fall within the scope.

  • Guarantee on inclusion, attribution, preferred label, ranking, clicks, leads or turnover.
  • Complete rewrite of all pages.
  • Implementation of all technical tickets and structured data.
  • Management of Google Business Profile or Merchant Center without access and agreed scope.
  • Ongoing Search Console and conversion reporting.
  • Optimization for external systems outside the agreed GEO scope.
  • Paid advertisements, publications or artificial listings.

How much does optimization cost for Google AI Overviews?

The price depends on the number of priority pages, technical problems, markets, languages, Google products and the desired measurement frequency.

Price factorWhy it determines the scope
Number of source pagesMore pages require more analysis, editing and quality control.
Technical conditionIndexing, rendering, canonicals and templates may require development.
Markets and languagesEvery market requires its own search questions, sources and measurement context.
Entities and Google productsMultiple brands, locations, products and feeds increase the scope of control.
MeasurementA baseline measurement requires less follow-up than monthly reporting.
ImplementationAdvice, joint implementation and full implementation have a different scope.

A concrete proposal follows after defining the pages, technical responsibility and reporting. A fixed package price without this context would not be very reliable.

When is this optimization not the right first step?

Targeted optimization for Google generative functions is of little use if the regular Search basis is not yet in order.

  • Important pages are not crawlable or indexed.
  • The content repeats general information without any value of its own.
  • The website contains serious duplication or unclear canonicals.
  • Company, product or location data is inconsistent internally and externally.
  • There is no capacity to implement substantive or technical recommendations.
  • The goal is solely a guaranteed source attribution or a positive screenshot.
