The goal is not just to rank higher for as many keywords as possible. Good SEO connects real search queries with usable pages, a technically reliable website and a measurable next step, such as a request, purchase, visit or registration.

What does SEO stand for?
SEO is the abbreviation of Search Engine Optimization and means search engine optimization in Dutch.
The field includes sustainable improvements that allow search engines to find, process and show relevant pages to the right user. This goes further than processing words in a text. Navigation, technology, content, external reputation, local data and measurement also determine whether a page is usable and visible.
What are organic search results?
Organic search results are results for which the website owner does not pay the search engine per click.
They can include classic blue links, local results, images, videos, product listings, rich results and generative search functions with supporting links. Which form appears depends on the search query, available information and the search product used.
What is the purpose of SEO?
The goal of SEO is to build relevant visibility for questions that match your target group, expertise and business goals.
| Goal | What it means |
|---|---|
| Range | Appear for relevant search queries and topics. |
| Quality | Bringing the right user to the right page. |
| Understanding | Help search engines and visitors understand who you are and what the page offers. |
| Experience | Offer a fast, accessible and clear page. |
| Conversion | Help visitors take an appropriate next step. |
| Sustainability | Build an information and website base that can be maintained and expanded. |
How does a search engine work?
A search engine discovers pages, crawls the content, processes useful information in an index and then displays results that match a search query.
Google officially groups this into crawling, indexing and serving. Discovery precedes crawling and is done, for example, through internal links and sitemaps. Crawling, indexing and display are never guaranteed, even when a page is technically accessible.
| Step | What's happening? | Common blockage |
|---|---|---|
| Discover | The search engine finds URLs through links, sitemaps and other well-known sources. | Orphan pages and unclear navigation. |
| Crawling | A crawler retrieves the page and available files. | robots.txt, server errors, login or inaccessible rendering. |
| Indexing | The search engine analyzes content, meaning, relationships and technical signals. | Duplication, noindex, weak main content or unclear canonicals. |
| Show | Systems select appropriate results and search functions from the index. | Insufficient relevance, quality or suitability for the search query. |
Google describes this process in the official explanation of how Google Search works.
How does SEO help with discovery, indexing and display?
SEO improves technical access, content relevance, reliability, experience and measurability around every step of the search process.
| SEO layer | Practical contribution |
|---|---|
| Discover and crawl | Logical internal links, sitemaps, clear URLs and accessible HTML. |
| Indexing | Unieke hoofdinhoud, correcte canonicals, bruikbare metadata en weinig duplicatie. |
| Relevance | A page that fully and clearly answers the search intent. |
| Reliability | Transparent authorship, sources, own experience, cases and external reputation signals. |
| Use | Good mobile experience, speed, accessibility and clear navigation. |
| Measurement | Link Search Console, analytics and conversion data to actions taken. |
What parts does SEO consist of?
SEO consists of four work domains that reinforce each other: on-page SEO, technical SEO, off-page SEO and local SEO where location is relevant.
Not every website needs the same amount of work in every domain. The first priority follows from data and from the largest blockage for the most important pages.

Check out local SEOWhat is on-page SEO?
On-page SEO improves the content and structure of a page so that the search question, the answer, the main entity and the next step are clear.
- One dominant search intent and main topic per page.
- A title and H1 that correctly describe the content.
- Headings where the first sentence directly answers the question.
- Sufficient context, examples, evidence, and limitations.
- Internal links to parent, in-depth and supporting pages.
- A clear next step for the visitor.
Deepen this through SEO copywriting, keyword research and a logical internal link structure.
What is technical SEO?
Technical SEO ensures that important pages are accessible, indexable, consistent and usable for search engines and visitors.
- Crawlable navigation and internal links.
- Correct robots rules, canonicals, redirects and XML sitemaps.
- Important content in accessible textual form.
- Mastery of JavaScript, filters, parameters and duplicate URLs.
- Mobile usability, speed and visual stability.
- Structured data that matches the visible content.
A technical SEO audit makes problems verifiable. Deepen performance through Optimize Core Web Vitals and markup through structured data and schema.org.
What is off page SEO?
Off-page SEO includes relevant external signals that help demonstrate that a website, brand or author is recognized outside of your own site.
This includes quality links, independent listings, digital PR, professional publications and other verifiable sources. The goal is not to collect as many links as possible, but to build relevant reputation and discoverability without manipulative patterns. Also read how responsible linkbuilding is tackled.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO helps companies become visible for search queries in which a location, distance, work area or local visit is important.
- A correct and complete Google Business Profile.
- Consistent company name, address, telephone and opening hours.
- Clear services and areas of work.
- Real reviews and a process for responding to them.
- Local service pages with independent value.
- Relevant local entries and internal links.
Across multiple services and regions, a local SEO specialist can help build local demand coverage without publishing thin place variants.
What is search intent?
Search intent is the purpose behind a search query: to understand, compare, find a website, choose local, or perform an action.
| Intention | Expected page | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Informative | An explanation, definition or step-by-step page. | What is technical SEO? |
| Comparative | A comparison with criteria, differences and decision aid. | SEO vs SEA. |
| Navigating | The official website, organization or specific page. | Jakency SEO. |
| Local | A service, store or specialist in a region. | SEO consultant Limburg. |
| Commercial or transactional | A service, product, booking or request page. | Outsource SEO. |
A page does not compete sustainably by repeating a word often, but by making the content, format and next step fit what the user needs.
What is keyword research?
Keyword research maps the words, questions, topics and intentions with which a target group searches for information or solutions.
The result is not a long list of individual terms. A useful study groups search queries, links them to existing or new URLs, and prevents multiple pages from competing for the same intent. See the complete method for keyword research.
What is good SEO content?
Good SEO content is original, useful, and reliable content that answers a real question completely enough for the intended user.
Google recommends creating people-first content and warns against content produced primarily to manipulate rankings. Real experience, added value, transparent authorship and a satisfactory answer are more important than writing for an alleged algorithmic trick.
| Quality characteristic | Application |
|---|---|
| Own contribution | Experience, data, examples, methodology, cases or a recognizable point of view. |
| Clear answer | The core is stated early and is subsequently substantiated. |
| Appropriate depth | The page covers what is needed, without artificial word length. |
| Reliability | Auteur, organisatie, bronnen, datum en beperkingen zijn zichtbaar waar relevant. |
| Structure | Headings, tables and lists help the user navigate and compare. |
| Maintenance | Changing facts are checked and updated. |
The official criteria can be found in Google's explanation of helpful, reliable, people-first content.
How many words does an SEO page need?
There is no ideal SEO word length. A page must answer the search intent completely enough and not be longer than is necessary for the user.
A short definition page may be sufficient for a simple question. A complex comparison, audit or purchasing decision requires more context, evidence and explanation. Google confirms in the SEO Starter Guide that content length in itself is not a ranking goal.
What is structured data and does it help SEO?
Structured data is machine-readable markup that describes specific information on a page according to a shared vocabulary.
Correct markup can make a page eligible for supported search features and helps model facts in a technically consistent manner. It does not replace visible content, indexing or relevance and does not guarantee a ranking or rich result. Always let structured data match what the user sees on the page.
How important are backlinks?
Relevant links can help search engines and users discover a page and provide an external signal around reputation and context.
Not every link has the same value. Links from relevant, reliable context are more useful than large numbers of artificial or irrelevant references. A healthy strategy starts with content and evidence that other parties actually want to mention.
How do you start with SEO?
Start with goals, measurability and the most important existing pages before publishing a lot of new content.
- Determine which services, products, locations and conversions are priorities.
- Verify the website in Search Console and check analytics and conversion tracking.
- Verify that important URLs are crawlable, indexable, and technically consistent.
- Map search questions and search intent per customer phase.
- Link each major intention to one primary page.
- Improve existing pages with traction before creating new pages.
- Build missing resource, service and support pages.
- Strengthen internal links, navigation and breadcrumbs.
- Work on relevant external mentions and local signals where necessary.
- Measure by page, query, period and business goal, then choose the next priority.
Which SEO action comes first?
The first SEO action follows from the most obvious problem in crawling, indexing, relevance, click behavior, authority or conversion.
| Data signal | First check |
|---|---|
| Important page missing in Google | Check crawling, indexing, canonical and internal links. |
| Lots of impressions, few clicks | Improve title, snippet, search intent and differentiation of the page. |
| Relevant impressions beyond the top results | Assess content, evidence, internal links, and competing intent. |
| Multiple pages appear for the same question | Analyze cannibalization and choose one primary URL. |
| Local visibility remains lacking | Check Business Profile, service, region, reviews and company details. |
| Traffic is growing but requests are not | Assess intent, offer, landing page, CTA and conversion measurement. |
| Unknown where the problem is | Start with a SEO audit and baseline measurement. |
How do you measure SEO results?
SEO results are measured per goal, page and period. One average position or total score is insufficient.
| Measuring area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Indexing | Are intended pages indexed and unintended URLs under control? |
| Visibility | Impressions, query coverage, and pages with relevant traction. |
| Click behavior | Clicks and CTR by query, page, device and position context. |
| Organic visit | Landing pages, engagement and development over similar time periods. |
| Conversion | Requests, telephone calls, sales, registrations or other purposes. |
| Local actions | Profile views, website visits, route and contact actions where available. |
| Authority | Relevant referring domains, mentions and professional sources. |
| Execution | Which actions were published, when and on which URLs? |
Combine Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, conversion data and an action log. Report measurement period and significant changes so that trends are not attributed to SEO without context.
How long does SEO take?
There is no fixed SEO turnaround time. Technical processing, competition, website history, content, authority and implementation speed determine how quickly changes become visible.
A technical error can disappear relatively quickly after recrawling, while new authority or visibility in a competitive market can take much longer. Therefore, work with interim milestones: correct indexing, better query coverage, higher relevant CTR and ultimately business results.
Is SEO a one-time project?
SEO can start as a defined project, but sustainable visibility requires maintenance when the website, competition, products, search questions or search functions change.
Not every part needs to be adjusted monthly. Good working methods combine stable foundations with periodic checks of technology, content, internal links, external signals and performance. Organic value can continue, but rankings or traffic are never permanently guaranteed.
What does SEO cost?
SEO costs depend on the starting situation, competition, website size, technical complexity, content needs and desired implementation.
An audit or advice moment has a different scope than a process with technical implementation, content, local SEO, authority and reporting. Therefore, compare deliverables, responsibility and measurement plan, not just a monthly amount. The full budget context is at what does SEO cost.
Is SEO free?
Organic clicks have no direct advertising costs per click, but SEO does require time, expertise, technology, content, tooling and maintenance.
Doing it yourself can limit external costs, but has an internal time cost. Outsourcing can add speed and specialist quality, but requires a budget and clear agreements.
What is the difference between SEO and SEA?
SEO builds organic visibility, while SEA buys advertising space in search results as long as campaigns and budget are active.
| Aspect | SEO | SEA |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Organic search results and search functions. | Posting tagged as an advertisement. |
| Payment | No payment to the search engine per organic click. | Usually payment per click or conversion according to campaign setting. |
| Go | Depending on crawling, indexing, competition and execution. | Can deliver traffic once campaigns are approved and running. |
| Maintenance | Maintain content, technology and reputation periodically. | Manage campaigns, bids, budget, ads and landing pages. |
| Stop | Visibility may continue but is not guaranteed. | Ad traffic stops when campaigns or budget stop. |
| Use | Build sustainable visibility and demand coverage. | Test quickly, buy direct reach and target campaigns. |
SEO and SEA can complement each other. Campaign data can provide search queries and conversion insights, while strong organic pages also serve as a landing page or long-term resource.
What is SEO Marketing?
SEO marketing is the use of search engine optimization as part of a broader marketing strategy.
It connects search queries, content, technology, authority, brand positioning and conversion with other channels such as Google Ads, email, social media and sales. SEO is a specialized channel within online marketing, not a synonym for all digital marketing.
Can you do SEO yourself?
You can do a lot of SEO work yourself if you have the time, access, and enough knowledge to properly publish and measure changes.
| Form of collaboration | When appropriate | Next page |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | For basic content, titles, internal links, Business Profile and simple measurement. | Step-by-step plan to score higher |
| Training | When a team wants to learn a repeatable method. | SEO training |
| Consultant | When performed internally but priorities and quality control are lacking. | SEO Consultant |
| Single service | For audit, research, migration, technology or a defined content problem. | SEO Services |
| Completely outsource | When strategy, planning, execution and follow-up are managed externally. | Outsource SEO |
What SEO tools do you need?
You don't need a big software package to get started, but you do need reliable indexing, performance, and conversion data.
| Tool category | Use |
|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Indexing, searches, pages, clicks, impressions and technical signals. |
| Analytics | Organic landing pages, behavior, conversions and channel context. |
| PageSpeed Insights | Lab and field performance information where available. |
| Crawler | Internal links, status codes, canonicals, metadata and website architecture. |
| Keyword or ranking tool | Research, competition and position control in addition. |
| Reporting tool | Bringing together data from multiple sources and giving context to actions. |
A tool score is not a Google ranking and does not replace a substantive review. Use SEO tools to find problems and test hypotheses, not as an end in itself.
Is SEO still relevant with AI search?
Yes. Fundamental SEO principles remain relevant for generative functions within Google, because AI Overviews and AI Mode build on the Search index and existing Search systems.
Google does not require any special AI markup, llms.txt, or separate AI schema. A page must be indexed and suitable for a regular Search snippet. People-first content, crawlability, internal links, textual main content and technical quality remain the basis. Read the current channel explanation about Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes organic visibility in search engines, while GEO provides a complementary, cross-channel approach to recognition, mentions and source citations in generative response engines.
| Aspect | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Visibility in organic search results and search functions. | Recognition and source position in generative responses. |
| Most important dates | Search Console, analytics, crawling, rankings and conversion. | Fixed prompts, mentions, citations, correctness and AI referrals. |
| Technical basis | Crawling, indexing, canonicals, internal links and page experience. | Dezelfde basis plus kanaalcrawlers, entity-consistentie en afzonderlijke meting. |
| Content focus | The best page for a search intent. | A clear and verifiable source for a question. |
| Relationship | Basics for Google Search, including Google generative functions. | Supplement for ChatGPT, Perplexity and other systems. |
The broader definition is what is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Use the equation difference between SEO and GEO for channel selection, overlap, and measurement differences.
What is SEO not?
SEO is not a payment, a guarantee, a universal checklist or a standalone AI hack.
- No payment to Google for organic rankings.
- No guarantee of position one.
- No one-off technical checklist that is never looked at again.
- No fixed word length, keyword density or universal tool score.
- Not a synonym for just writing blogs or buying backlinks.
- No way to force a search engine to crawl, index, or display a page.
- No separate AI hack that makes a reliable website base redundant.
Which SEO page do you need next?
Use your biggest question or blockage to go to the right floor.
| Question | Next page |
|---|---|
| I want to know what activities exist | SEO services |
| My pages need to be better in terms of content | on-page SEO |
| I suspect crawling or indexing problems | technical SEO |
| I want to build external authority | off-page SEO |
| I want to be found better locally | local SEO |
| I want direct advice from a specialist | SEO Consultant |
| I'm unsure between doing it internally and outsourcing it | Outsource SEO |
| I want price and budget context | what does SEO cost |
| I want to learn SEO | SEO training |
| I also want visibility into external AI systems | what is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) |
